"First of all, the next-generation MMO that we'll be working on is going to be different than Final Fantasy XI. And even though we have the same staff working on the project, and we have seen the good things from XI, and we've also seen the things that the players maybe didn't like as much...while we're going to be using that info while we make the next MMO, we're not going to make something that'll be exactly like FFXI. We're aiming for something different from the beginning."They added by saying the game won't necessarily replace FFXI and they hope that both can exist simultaneously.
"We want them to exist in the same world, to continue on side by side, without one replacing the other. And like we've always said before, as long as the players keep playing FFXI, we're going to continue making the content for it, and that has to do with the expansions as well. If players keep saying that they want to keep playing and that they want these things, then we'll keep providing them for them. For the time being it'll be handled with patches, like we have been doing. As for any announcements on the next MMO, I can't say anything."Only time will tell how big of a change this game will be, but it's nice to know they learned from FFXI and will attempt to improve on the games shortcomings.

How is this taking on a new direction exactly? I'm not trying to be ignorant or sarcastic, I'm just pondering if this new MMORPG will also take place in Vana'diel. If it is....how is this going in a "new direction". This doesn't make me any less excited for the game though - I loved Vana'diel - I can't even begin to imagine what next-gen capabilities could produce visually. Guess we're all still waiting for SE to let the cat outta the bag though.
Good to hear that SE acknowledges what the players want. Because in the end, that's what it's all about: the players.
I'm speculating it will not take place in Vana'diel as they said they want it to be completely different and both exist at the same time. So setting them both in the same place wouldn't really make sense.
Actually I look at it more as they are taking a different philosophy approach on what MMO means in comparison to FFXI. Instead of the Everquest like world which is situated around grinding EXP and just fighting monsters and getting more "Loot", maybe it will be more PvP dominant like say guild wars, or more casually friendly like WoW. Or hell maybe something else all together (like very different progression system for instance... who knows.) They basically mean it won't be just FFXI in a different world and with next-gen graphics. The game will fundamentally play differently than FFXI which is why they say it can coexist with FFXI. Two very different designed games where you won't get the same gameplay.
I'm glad I found this blog about the upcoming mmorpg.
I hope, however, that the next game doesn't take place in Vana'Diel.
I would like it to be a Final Fantasy, but a new realm with new races and story, ( they could keep TaruTaru however).
But whats more important is the fun factor, the game should be more like WoW but keeping what FF made great, the jobs, but with the ability to solo better.
I'm looking forward to this game. Its been a while since they released the 2005 tech footage, so I guess they have had a long time to develop the game at least to an advanced state.
